Sharks Swimming Set to Kick Off 2019-20

NSU welcomes IRSC and Florida to the NSU Aquatic Center

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Looking to continue their success from the 2018-19 season the Nova Southeastern men's and women's swimming teams will begin their 2019-20 season this Friday at the NSU Aquatic Center. The women's team will compete in a dual meet against Indian River State College, while the men will swim in a tri-meet including the IRSC River athletes and the University of Florida Gators.

The men's swimming team earned its third-straight Sunshine State Conference title in 2019, while the women went on to take fourth at the 2019 NCAA Div. II Championships, their third Top-5 finish in as many years. The Sharks earned four individual SSC individual awards, including Freshman of the Year on both the men's and women's sides (Sasha Maslova and Alessandro Xella), Women's Swimmer of the Year (Emma Sundstedt, her second-consecutive award) and Men's Coach of the Year (Ben Hewitt).

IRSC is a common foe for the Sharks, as the two teams have swam against each other each year since the start of the NSU programs back in 2010-11. On the men's side, the River holds a 6-3 record over the Sharks, while the IRSC women also hold a slight edge over the Sharks at 5-4. Last season at the NJCAA National Championships, IRSC brought home their 41st (women) and 45th (men) national championship titles. The men's record is the longest winning streak of any sport in the nation.

On the men's side, the tri-meet will include the University of Florida Gators, who will compete against the Sharks and IRSC for the first time in program history. The Gators posted a sixth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships, the seventh-straight year that Florida finished highest of any SEC team. A total of 12 Gators qualified for the championships, taking home 30 All-American honors for their performances.

Results for the meet will be posted on Meet Mobile, but be sure to follow @NSU_Swim on Twitter for updates.
